Carbon credits are units of measurement used to quantify and offset greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2, in the atmosphere. These credits represent the reduction of one ton of greenhouse gas or the absorption of an equivalent amount of greenhouse gas through emission reduction or reforestation projects.

Carborea's carbon credits are generated from new olive tree plantations in Salento.

In particular, our credits come from planting new olive trees in areas where there are dry olive trees (due to Xylella) and from the application of sustainable agricultural practices, capable of reducing the environmental impact that would occur using conventional agricultural practices in new plantations.

These practices lead to the occurrence of the principle of additionality: the planting of new olive trees, replacing dead olive trees, leads to an additional increase in tree species that remove CO2 from the atmosphere by emitting new oxygen. Furthermore, sustainable agricultural practices reduce the negative impact generated by conventional practices, generating additional carbon credits.

To certify the carbon credits generated by a project, it is essential to establish two scenarios:

1. The baseline scenario (or reference scenario) which represents a reference forecast of future conditions without any changes or interventions.

2. The project scenario which represents a series of activities or agricultural practices that are intended to be applied to achieve the desired CO2 sequestration objective.

These scenarios allow us, through the so-called Onboarding process (site inspection, sampling, analysis, calculation, and project registration), to ascertain the minimum requirements for the project to be suitable for generating credits and to identify the data to be collected, both from trees and soil through soil sampling. The collected information, once examined, allows us to generate a feasibility report and establish the amount of carbon sequestered.

The methodology currently used by Carborea is the one proposed by Coorest. This methodology is certified by Earthood, an entity accredited to the United Nations.

The entire process complies with the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) afforestation and reforestation methodology developed and approved by the UNFCCC.

For the calculation of carbon sequestration, Coorest's methodology has been adopted, certified by Earthood, an internationally recognized auditor accredited by UNFCCC.

Coorest's methodology integrates the monitoring process developed by Floodlight, a leading American company in the dMRV sector which, through satellite surveys up to 1 square meter resolution, provides accurate and updated project data.

The monitoring phase, following the Onboarding phase, takes place through the
MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification) process, which is carried out at regular intervals and serves to monitor, with satellite detection technologies and on-site checks, the health status of the trees and the correct application of agricultural practices necessary to ensure the continuity and efficiency of carbon sequestration over time. Furthermore, for each project, it is planned that 10% of the planted trees will be used as a reserve, to deal with any risks that could compromise the ability of olive trees to absorb CO2 or their very life.

The credits generated by Carborea are recorded on Blockchain. Blockchain, in addition to guaranteeing the uniqueness of the transaction executed on the quantity of carbon credits, ensures authenticity and transparency. This makes compensation verifiable by anyone at any time.

Calculating the carbon footprint involves analyzing and evaluating greenhouse gas emissions associated with an activity, product, service, or even an entire organization. Here are the 5 main steps to calculate the carbon footprint:

  1. Identification of emission sources: The first phase consists of identifying all sources of greenhouse gas emissions related to the activity or system under examination. These sources may include energy use, transportation, waste production, agricultural activities, etc.

  2. Data collection: Once emission sources have been identified, it is necessary to collect accurate data on energy consumption, transport mileage, materials used, industrial processes, etc. This data can come from energy bills, travel logs, company balance sheets, and so on.

  3. Conversion of activities into CO2 equivalent emissions: The different emission sources are converted into standard units of CO2 equivalent, which represent the warming potential of each greenhouse gas compared to carbon dioxide (CO2). For example, methane (CH4) has a higher global warming potential than CO2, so methane emissions are converted into CO2 equivalent units based on its warming potential.

  4. Calculation of total emissions: Once all activities have been converted into CO2 equivalent emissions, they are summed to obtain the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with the activity or system under examination. This value represents the carbon footprint.

  5. Analysis and interpretation: Finally, the calculated carbon footprint can be analyzed and interpreted to identify the main sources of emissions, identify reduction opportunities, and plan actions to mitigate environmental impact.

It is important to note that calculating the carbon footprint can be complex and may vary depending on the methodology used and the data available. However, following these fundamental steps can help obtain an accurate estimate of greenhouse gas emissions and guide actions to reduce environmental impact.

Thanks to the partnership with MAN CONSULTING, we can guide and support you in the process of calculating the Carbon Footprint of your business.

Offsetting the Carbon Footprint means neutralizing or balancing the greenhouse gas emissions generated by an activity, product, service, or organization by financing projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere.

After reducing or eliminating activities that involve emitting CO2 into the atmosphere, to further reduce or zero out the carbon footprint, it is possible to purchase carbon credits.

On Carborea, purchasing carbon credits is simple and intuitive. Simply enter on this page the amount of CO2 you intend to offset and proceed with the purchase of the corresponding carbon credits. Immediately after the purchase and destruction of the credits, we send via email a compensation certificate indicating the amount of CO2 offset.

Purchasing Italian and certified carbon credits on Carborea is very simple:

  1. Visit this page;
  2. Enter the amount of CO2 you intend to offset;
  3. Proceed with the purchase and consequent destruction of the credits.

At the end of the procedure, we will automatically send the compensation certificate (POCC) indicating the amount of CO2 offset, the company name, and the reason for which the compensation was carried out. Furthermore, the compensation certificate (POCC) indicates the transaction code registered on Blockchain. This allows the carbon credit purchase operation to be transparent and verifiable.

On Carborea, it is possible to purchase certified and Italian carbon credits using any payment method. We accept credit/debit cards, PayPal, or bank transfer.

After purchasing carbon credits, we will automatically send you the compensation certificate (POCC) indicating the amount of CO2 offset, the company name, and the reason for which the compensation was carried out. Furthermore, the compensation certificate (POCC) indicates the transaction code registered on Blockchain. This allows the carbon credit purchase operation to be transparent and verifiable.

The compensation certificate (POCC) is automatically sent via email immediately after purchasing the carbon credits.

You can also retrieve it at any time by accessing your personal area from this page. Your account is automatically generated when you purchase carbon credits.
